Firstly, let us know what fasting is 

Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam and a great ritual of Islam.

Allah, the Almighty, said:”يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ”

Ramadan comes once a year

Muslims await the holy month of Ramadan every year, and therefore, they are keen to complete their fast in the best possible way. Fasting has rules, regulations, and invalidators. Let us learn about them and about the things that invalidate fasting.

God forgive us for our mistakes and forgetfulness

t was narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has forgiven my ummah for their mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do.” This is a hasan hadith narrated by Ibn Majah, al-Bayhaqi, and others. Based on this, if a fasting person does something that invalidates his fast without knowing, or because he forgot, or because he was forced to do so, then he may complete his fast, and it will not be regarded as invalid.

What are the things that invalidate fasting?

Eight things invalidate fasting, which are:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Masturbation
  • Eating and drinking
  • Anything that is considered eating or drinking
  • Bloodletting
  • Intentional vomiting
  • Menstrual bleeding
  • Postpartum bleeding in women

What invalidates fasting for women?

1- Menstrual bleeding.

2- Postpartum bleeding

3- Sexual intercourse: If a woman has intercourse with here husband during the day in Ramadan intentionally, here fast is invalidated .

These things invalidate fasting because of the harm they cause to women if they continue fasting while their bodies are in a state of weakness as a result of these things.

What are the things that invalidate fasting for men?

1- Sexual intercourse: If a man has intercourse with his wife during the day in Ramadan intentionally, his fast is invalidated, and he must make up for it and offer a severe expiation, which is to free a slave. If he cannot find a slave, then he must fast for two consecutive months. If he is unable to do so, then he must feed sixty poor people.

2- Masturbation: This is unanimously considered to invalidate fasting if it results in the emission of semen, because it is a form of sexual desire that the fasting person refrains from for the sake of Allah. The person must repent, refrain from sexual intercourse for the rest of the day, and make up for the day.

3- Smoking: Smoking invalidates fasting because it involves introducing smoke into the body through the mouth or nose, which is the same as eating and drinking.

What are the things that invalidate fasting outside of Ramadan?

The things that invalidate fasting outside of Ramadan, such as voluntary fasting, on Mondays and Thursdays, the Day of Arafah, and others, are the same as those that invalidate fasting in Ramadan in terms of invalidation. That is, eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse intentionally, and others, invalidate the fast. However, the fundamental difference lies in the ruling on breaking the fast. During Ramadan, it is forbidden to break the fast without a legitimate excuse, whereas during voluntary fasting, it is permissible for the fasting person to break the fast without an excuse, but it is recommended that they make up for that day.
